Books On Fear Of Flying

Fear Of Flying – Is It Now A Thing Of The Past
Aerophobia, aviatophobia, Aviophobia. These are all terms that refer to a fear. This fear is a fear of flying. A flying phobia is not uncommon. A fear of flying may represent flying in a plane or an offshoot of another type of phobia, such as claustrophobia or acrophobia. These are a fear of enclosed spaces and a fear of heights, respectfully. Other examples are a fear of not being in control of your environment or situation, a fear of a terrorist attack or being hijacked, a fear of water, and a fear of fear itself.
If you have to travel long distances often, such as for business, this can pose a real problem and a great deal of Anxiety. Within the family your fear of flying may prevent you visiting family and friends as well as restricting where you can take vacations. A fear of flying may serverely restrict your life style.
The Anxiety Of a person who has a flying phobia causes you to have the typical Anxiety Symptoms that are felt with any type of fear. Some of these symptoms are nausea, vomiting, a tightness in your chest or in your throat, difficulty breathing, difficulty swallowing, sweating, tremors, and even a full-blown Panic Attack complete with hyperventilating. It is not comfortable for the sufferer and it is not comfortable for those around the sufferer, as they are helpless in what they can do to comfort you. If the person who suffers with a fear of flying has had a bad experience in the past while flying this will only increase their anxiety.
Overcoming a flying phobia is almost essential for the person who fears flying. There are many ways that can be found to overcome this problem. This help comes in the form of educating the person, therapy, either private individualized therapy or group therapy, self-help books and audio tapes. There are even virtual reality sessions that you can take to help overcome this phobia, as well as a free online course. Medication may also be utilized either alone or in combination with the above suggestions. It is better though if the person did not rely on medication, but therapy alone. However, some people are not able to overcome their anxiety without this additional form of treatment.
For those that do suffer from a fear of flying, seek help as soon as possible. There is no reason to limit yourself in life and miss out on some very enjoyable experiences. Remember, if you must travel long distances flying in a plane is the fastest and most convenient way to travel. Over 3 million people choose air travel every day as their mode of transportation and this is a safe way to get to where you want and need to go. Do not let anxiety bring you down and put a damper on life. Seek help today.

Reading Jackie Her Autobiography in Books (Hardcover) Book $27.95 Explore the hardcover Reading Jackie book and you’ll come to understand a different side of the most famous woman of her time. As an editor for Doubleday and Viking, Jackie was a driven and hard-working professional, and not just the glamorous widow of a president, or ex-wife of a Greek billionaire. Among Jackie Kennedy books, Reading Jackie Her Autobiography in Books is a standout, providing a different perspective on the iconic former first lady. In the hardcover Reading Jackie book, you’ll learn that Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis never wrote a memoir, but she told her life story and revealed herself in intimate ways through the nearly 100 books she brought into print during the last two decades of her life as an editor at Viking and Doubleday. Based on archives and interviews with Jackie’s authors, colleagues, and friends, Reading Jackie mines this significant period of her life to reveal both the serious and the mischievous woman underneath the glamorous public image. In the Jackie Kennedy book, Reading Jackie, though Jackie had a reputation for avoiding publicity, she willingly courted controversy in her books. She was the first editor to commission a commercially-successful book telling the story of Thomas Jefferson’s relationship with his female slave. And you’ll learn in the Jackie Kennedy autobiography book, Reading Jackie, that her publication of Gelsey Kirkland’s attack on dance icon George Balanchine caused another storm. Jackie rarely spoke of her personal life, but many of her books ran parallel to, echoed, and emerged from her own experience. In the hardcover Reading Jackie book, you’ll see that she was the editor behind bestsellers on the assassinations of Tsar Nicholas II and John Lennon, and in another book she paid tribute to the allure of Marilyn Monroe and Maria Callas. Her other projects take us into territory she knew well: journeys to Egypt and India, explorations of the mysteries of female beauty and media exploitation, into the minds of photographers, art historians, and the designers at Tiffany & Co. In the Jackie Kennedy book, Reading Jackie, you’ll discover that many Americans regarded Jackie as the paragon of grace, but few knew her as the woman sitting on her office floor laying out illustrations, or flying to California to persuade Michael Jackson to write his autobiography. Reading Jackie provides a compelling behind-the-scenes look at Jackie at work: how she commissioned books and nurtured authors, as well as how she helped to shape stories that spoke to her strongly. In the Jackie Kennedy autobiography book, Reading Jackie, you’ll see that Jackie is remembered today for her marriages to JFK and to Aristotle Onassis, but her real legacy is the books that reveal the tastes, recollections, and passions of an independent woman. Shop for the hardcover Reading Jackie book to explore the fascinating third act of the former first lady. |

Ambulance Girl $13.95 Five years ago Jane Stern was a walking encyclopedia of panic attacks, depression, and hypochondria. Her marriage of more than thirty years was suffering, and she was virtually immobilized by fear and anxiety. As the daughter of parents who both died before she was thirty, Stern was terrified of illness and death, and despite the fact that her acclaimed career as a food and travel writer required her to spend a great deal of time on airplanes, she suffered from a persistent fear of flying and severe claustrophobia. But a strange thing happened one day on a plane that was grounded at the Minneapolis airport for six horrible, foodless, airless hours. A young man on a trip with his classmates suddenly became dizzy and pale because he hadn’t eaten in many hours, and there was no food left on the plane. Without thinking about it, Jane gave him the candy bar that she had in her purse. A short time later the color had returned to his cheeks, the boy was laughing again with his friends, and Jane realized that this one small act of kindness–helping another person who was suffering–had provided her with comfort and a sense of well-being. It was shortly thereafter that this fifty-two-year-old writer decided to become an emergency medical technician, eventually coming to be known as Ambulance Girl. Stern tells her story with great humor and poignancy, creating a wonderful portrait of a middle-aged, Woody Allen-ish woman who was deeply and neurotically terrified of sick and dead people, but who went out into the world to save other people’s lives as a way of saving her own. Her story begins with the boot camp of EMT training: 140 hours at the hands of a dour ex-marine who took delight inpresenting a veritable parade of amputations, hideous deformities, and gross disasters. Jane–overweight and badly out of shape–had to surmount physical challenges like carrying a 250-pound man seated in a chair down a dark flight of stairs. After class she did rounds in the emergency ro |

Compiletely Bats $14.98 A CD reissue of the Bats’ first three EPs, this disc gathers the entirety of 1984′s By Night, 1985′s And Here Is “Music for the Fireside,” and 1986′s Made up in Blue, minus one minor track, “Earwig,” from the debut. (This set was originally released on cassette by Flying Nun in 1987, just before the Bats’ first proper album, the excellent Daddy’s Highway.) What’s remarkable about hearing these early tracks after definitive Bats albums like that full-length debut or Fear of God is how fully realized Robert Scott’s vision of the group was from the very beginning. Comparing this collection to the Chills’ very similar but considerably spottier Kaleidoscope World, it’s obvious that Scott had a plan for his group from the beginning. That trademark mix of dark-hued guitar jangle (rather like these Kiwis’ Australian counterparts the Church without the pretension or the ’60s obsession), dry, offhand vocals, and melodies that tend to meander around rather than stick to traditional verse-chorus structures is in full bloom here. Although some of the tracks aren’t up to the Bats’ later standards — the lo-fi recording, especially on the tracks from By Night, doesn’t do the songs any favors — Compiletely Bats stands up well as a full-fledged Bats album. ~ Stewart Mason, Rovi |

Five of the Few $11.22 Churchill’s ‘Few’ will forever be remembered by history as men who thwarted the seemingly invincible German war machine, when all seemed lost. They countered the full force of the Luftwaffe in the daylight battles during the summer of 1940, and in the night skies of the winter and spring of 1940/41. They were at the time, and still are, perceived as knights of the air, as our heroes. Now, five distinguished RAF airmen, four pilots and one radar operator/navigator, who fought that air battle during the Battle of Britain and the Blitz, have recounted their experiences in detail to author Steve Darlow. Their stories have never before been published, and they talk engagingly of their service life, combats, losses, injuries, friendships and fears – flying Spitfires, Hurricanes, Blenheims, Beaufighters and Havocs. One pilot tells of the time he fell victim to the enemy – ‘My Spitfire stopped being a flying machine, it became a lump of metal. I was going down with it and I couldn’t get out. I broke the seat by standing on it. The pressure throwing me into the bottom was terrific…’ A Beaufighter radar operator remembers being involved in shooting down a German aircraft – ‘He took a vertical dive, struck the ground and exploded with a shower of incendiaries. I felt like a child with a new toy. I had at last proved myself but for some reason I suddenly felt a little sad.’ But Five of the Few is not just about the experiences of these men during 1940/41. They would also distinguish themselves in subsequent air campaigns – night defense of the UK, offensive operations over the continent and support to D-Day and beyond. In between the aerial combats and ground attack operations, promotions, decorations and command responsibilities would come their way. But not all would make it through safely to the end of the war. One would end up behind barbed wire. Collectively Five of the Few is a war story of youth maturing, through aspiration and idealism, courage and bravado, fear and h |

Flying Changes: Horses as Spiritual Teachers $269.27 Other creatures of the Earth are asking to be our spiritual teachers, says Heyward, and learning from them is a source of hope for the world. Reflecting on the seven spiritual lessons taught to her by horses, Heyward explores: 1) passion as real presence; 2) otherness as remembering what we aren’t; 3) fear as shrinking spirituality; 4) balance as sitting deep and well; 5) beauty as reflecting who we are; 6) patience as taking time; and 7) whimsy as being light as a feather. Dedicated to the staff, students, volunteers, and horses at Heyward’s farm–Free Rein Center for Therapeutic Riding and Education in Brevard, North Carolina–Flying Changes includes 15 black and white photographs of horses and a selected bibliography. |

High Mileage Hearts: Sharing Our Journey $19.95 HIGH MILEAGE HEARTS takes us back into the 20th century to days when if your dog lost the use of his hindquarters, he wasn’t euthanized. Instead, he maneuvered about on a wheeled, home-built cart with a high-flying flag to pinpoint his location. The nine authors explore small town and rural living in a quieter, safer, more serene time, when fear meant the possibility of a snake dropping from the rafters rather than an act of terrorism, when a pharmacy security system was an oversized, rambunctious dog, not electronic surveillance. The authors share their quest for adventure, their quiet times, the fun and folly of their lives. The poetry addresses everything from humor to spirituality. Fiction is drawn from the imaginations and life experiences of the authors. We can’t, nor perhaps would we want to, go back but we can cherish the way it used to be. |

Hollywood Vs. the Aliens $7.14 The collusion of government and the entertainment industry, from the ’30s to the present– Scrutinizes the depiction of aliens from War of the Worlds to Independence DayThe line between fact and fantasy, fear and fun, has always been a thin one in Hollywood films. Now it becomes even more blurred in Hollywood vs. the Aliens. Film historian Bruce Rux posits that the film industry has long collaborated with a government disinformation campaign about UFOs, shaping and controlling popular knowledge about documented UFO activity. The book uncovers the conspiracy roots of government involvement in science fiction/horror movies, from pulp-fiction and Lost World romances to films dealing with flying saucers, the planet Mars, mind control, and extraterrestrials.Written in a mock-serious tone reminiscent of Rod Serling’s Twilight Zone TV series, and illustrated with old movie stills, Hollywood vs. the Aliens is a fascinating, fun read, yet delivers some startling findings. In the first part, The Real Thing , Rux reviews the facts known about UFOs and ancient technologies, and how they came to be discovered. The second part, The Reel Thing , investigates the period between the 1930s and 1950s, focusing on the CIA’s Robertson Panel’s recommendation that Hollywood be used as a deflectionary tool against popular interest in UFOs. Government involvement in Orson Welles’s 1938 War of the Worlds broadcast is discussed, as are the Disney and United Artists studios’ early connections to patriotic propaganda. Early ’50s movies like The Thing from Another World and The Day the Earth Stood Still show UFOlogical facts that only government sources could have known about at the time. The book thengoes on to discuss recent releases and the ongoing depiction of aliens and UFOs. |
