As mentioned earlier, medication helps in reducing the physical symptoms of anxiety or stress. Medication used in anxiety treatment reduces negative emotions and acts as anti depressant.

Will avoiding things which make a person anxious help in getting over anxiety?

For a short term it helps but this makes it even harder when the same worrying situation arises. Instead it is important to address the problem directly. Psychotherapy or cognitive behavioral therapy helps in the same.

What is psychotherapy?

To treat the mental distress opting for psychotherapy is one of the best solutions. Psychotherapy is a treatment for emotional, behavioral and psychiatric disorders by using verbal communication rather than using drugs. It is effective and helps in addressing the real cause of the problem by building a friendly understanding between the patient and the psychotherapist. Trained psychotherapists help the person suffering from psychological problems by using customized approach for his/her problem.

The long-term effects of genocidal wars on adolescent survivors are not sufficiently understood. Holocaust survivors can help us understand more clearly the long-term impacts of genocide, as well as the coping mechanisms survivors have used through the years to cope with those impacts.;This study, guided by the theoretical lenses of the traumatic stress, coping, and resilience literatures, is a secondary analysis of the interviews of 18 Jewish survivors of the Holocaust who were between the ages of 12 and 18 during World War II. The sample is purposive and taken from the Transcending Trauma Project data base, an ongoing qualitative research study of Holocaust survivors, their children, and grandchildren. Interviews were analyzed using a modified grounded theory approach and facilitated by the use of NUD.ist 4 qualitative software.;This study found three major long-term impacts on these individuals which continued into old age: sadness of the losses, including multiple losses of family members, loss of childhood, and loss of education; traumatic memories, including traumatic dreams; and anxiety and hyper-vigilance, especially regarding children and the world political situation. Love and work—intimate social support, and work that functioned to provide meaning in survival as well as distraction from traumatic memories—were the foundations of coping. Other important coping mechanisms used to manage the traumatic impacts of the Holocaust were: loyalty to the dead, the search for meaning and “survivor mission,” stories of strength, telling the trauma, and a community of sameness. The long-term effects of genocidal wars on adolescent survivors are not sufficiently understood. Holocaust survivors can help us understand more clearly the long-term impacts of genocide, as well as the coping mechanisms survivors have used through the years to cope with those impacts.;This study, guided by the theoretical lenses of the traumatic stress, coping, and resilience literatures, is a secondary analysis of the interviews of 18 Jewish survivors of the Holocaust who were between the ages of 12 and 18 during World War II. The sample is purposive and taken from the Transcending Trauma Project data base, an ongoing qualitative research study of Holocaust survivors, their children, and grandchildren. Interviews were analyzed using a modified grounded theory approach and facilitated by the use of NUD.ist 4 qualitative software.;This study found three major long-term impacts on these individuals which continued into old age: sadness of the losses, including multiple losses of family members, loss of childhood, and loss of education; traumatic memories, including traumatic dreams; and anxiety and hyper-vigilance, especially regarding children and the world political situation. Love and work—intimate social support, and work that functioned to provide meaning in survival as well as distraction from traumatic memories—were the foundations of coping. Other important coping mechanisms used to manage the traumatic impacts of the Holocaust were: loyalty to the dead, the search for meaning and “survivor mission,” stories of strength, telling the trauma, and a community of sameness. Research shows that stepparents experience considerable amounts of stress (e.g., Brady, Bray, & Zeeb, 1986), particularly stepmothers (Booth & Dunn, 1994; Cherlin & Furstenberg, 1994). The current study examined the effects of stepparent stress on stepmothers' mental health, marital satisfaction, and life satisfaction. Childless stepmothers (CSM) were compared to stepmothers with children (SWC) to identify key differences between these groups of stepmothers. No prior studies comparing these groups are known. Results indicated that the 337 stepmothers in this sample are not experiencing clinical levels of mental health difficulties (i.e., anxiety, depression), and they exhibit typical levels of marital satisfaction and life satisfaction. CSMs reported lower marital satisfaction, higher role captivity, higher exclusion from their partners' relationships with the stepchildren than SWCs. SWCs reported higher role ambiguity for the stepmother role than CSMs. Most notably, CSMs reported higher role salience for their occupations, while SWCs reported higher role salience for the role of parent. Among CSMs, the desire to have children was significantly correlated with role salience for the role of parent. This suggests that there may be two subgroups of stepmothers: those who desire to have children, and those who are intentionally child-free. Trends in the data were also noted, with CSMs reporting higher self-esteem and lower life satisfaction than SWCs. These differences between group means on these variables approached but did not achieve statistical significance. The findings indicate that, although CSMs and SWCs indicate the same level of overall stepparent role strain, there are differences between the groups in terms of type of role strain experienced, marital satisfaction, and life role salience.

This heuristic research interviewed eleven, midlife professional women who use the expressive arts. The initial research question was whether the use of the expressive arts reduced anxiety and lessened stress. All eleven of the women interviewed agreed that it did, both in their personal and professional lives. However, other findings in the interviews emphasized the importance of negative or positive feedback in childhood and the impact on future involvement in the expressive arts. The women interviewed in this study had all compensated for any negative feedback by either moving to another modality of expressive art or, with familial and/or supportive relationships, transcended the negative influence. Additional discoveries included the engagement of the expressive arts in midlife as substantially contributing to self-growth opportunities and a positive outlook for the future. Also, it was discovered that when involvement in the expressive arts increased, anxiety tended to diminish to the extent that people were not really speaking about the anxiety, they were really speaking about the journey of self-growth. Expressive arts expertise used by the co-researchers with themselves and clients provided information on techniques to engage others in expressive activities. The present qualitative study was an exploration of the impact of recurrent miscarriage (RM) on male partners. The purpose of the study was to understand male partners’ perceptions regarding their experience of RM and gain a comprehensive portrayal of the range of psychological and emotional consequences of RM on men. Semistructured interviews were conducted with a diverse sample of 15 men whose partners’ experienced RM. Female partners completed a qualitative survey. Open, axial, and selective themes emerged from the data analysis, yielding a grounded theory. The grounded theory emerged from a total of 55 open categories, 25 axial categories, and 8 selective categories.;The grounded theory that emerged revealed that the participants often suffered increasing grief and sorrow. This sadness occurred in conjunction with anxiety related to their wives’ health and fear that they would never experience fatherhood. Without any clear explanation regarding the cause(s) of the RM, the men felt helpless because they are unable to “fix” the problem or relieve their wives’ grief and pain. These men frequently experienced anger directed towards their wives, the medical establishment and/or the world in general. Most of the men used some maladaptive coping strategies, such as drinking alcohol to reduce their stress and grief. They tended to reach out for support as the miscarriages continued and many relied on their family and friends, particularly their female relatives. RM caused changes in the majority of the men’s personal relationships and greatly affected the marital relationship. Changes in the couples’ relationships occurred for all of the participants, but even those who had major strains during the RM experience reported a stronger bond and closer relationship at the time of the interview. Directions for future research and clinical implications for medical and mental health professionals are discussed.

This study focuses on wayfinding challenges in the Minneapolis skyway system in Minnesota, a pedestrian skywalk system that currently connects various buildings in Downtown Minneapolis. Wayfinding and visual communication criteria used in evaluating the skyway were adopted from previous studies or concepts from wayfinding professionals. As would happen with any tunnel-based skywalk, one of the major wayfinding problems of this complex skyway system is that it lacks a sense of orientation. Many people, especially first time visitors, get lost without having any knowledge of where they are within the skyway system.;After studying this problem, design solutions were developed to improve existing wayfinding conditions of the Minneapolis skyway by enhancing the sense of orientation rather than relying only on signage-based solutions as a wayfinding aid. The task for graphic designers, architects and other professionals who participate in building planning, is to design a sufficient and clear wayfinding system that will direct people in and out of the building, around the building, and to their destination effectively, comfortably, and confidently, without wasting any time or energy. The lack of orientation in an unfamiliar environment can lead to physical exhaustion, stress, anxiety, and frustration, all threaten their sense of well-being and limit one’s mobility. This study focuses on wayfinding challenges in the Minneapolis skyway system in Minnesota, a pedestrian skywalk system that currently connects various buildings in Downtown Minneapolis. Wayfinding and visual communication criteria used in evaluating the skyway were adopted from previous studies or concepts from wayfinding professionals. As would happen with any tunnel-based skywalk, one of the major wayfinding problems of this complex skyway system is that it lacks a sense of orientation. Many people, especially first time visitors, get lost without having any knowledge of where they are within the skyway system.;After studying this problem, design solutions were developed to improve existing wayfinding conditions of the Minneapolis skyway by enhancing the sense of orientation rather than relying only on signage-based solutions as a wayfinding aid. The design recommendations adopt Kevin Lynch’s elements of districts and landmarks, two of his five important elements necessary in forming mental maps as navigational aids to enhance wayfinding performance. These elements increase a person’s ability to see and remember patterns of an environmental space by creating one’s own mental map.

For almost 10 years, I spoke to captivated students and professionals about the “Lost or Found” analogy that covers critical everyday life-changing issues on leadership, relationship, management, and the complexities of dealing with change, personal growth and self-restoration. In contrast with previous research and contrary to expectations, few gender, academic track and school type differences were found. Further analyses indicated that different groups of students appeared to experience distress in different ways.;Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 12th standard students (n = 24) to explore their perceptions of academic stress and adolescent distress. The growing number of patients with a diagnosis of dementia represents a significant physical and mental health challenge not only for the health professions, but also, and even more dramatically, for the primary and secondary caregivers of dementia patients. Those affected include not only the persons with dementia, but also their spouses, siblings, children, friends, and caregivers. This study was designed to contribute to a deeper understanding of dementia caregivers’ anxiety, stress, and depression by adding an examination of the presence and extent of grief that may be a part of the experience. Further, this study was designed to identify and examine the particular part of grief that is referred to as anticipatory grief. Anticipatory grief is a real phenomenon that affects many family caregivers of dementia patients. This study reinforces not only that grief is present for dementia caregivers; it also provides additional evidence for the few studies completed aligning anticipatory grief to the dementia caregiving experience. This study shows that dementia caregivers are not experiencing “typical” grief; in fact, it demonstrates that their grief is much more complicated.
